Programs
SUMMEr program
Our academic school year runs for ten months from August-May. June and July are occupied by our summer camp program.
The summer is structured in four two-week sessions and one one-week session, corresponding to the OUSD calendar and allowing families with children at more than one school the flexibility they need for the summer. We cover a wide range of topics in two week long, outdoor-based summer sessions; here are a few examples.
What to Expect
Our Program's Unique Features
Botany
We care for our extensive gardens year round, but summer is a great time to let children explore the botanical growth cycle, in addition to learning to weed, water, plant, and harvest.
Space
There is room in a Montessori school for designing and building a cardboard spaceship and spending a week pretending to go exploring. We learn about NASA’s space missions, state of the art astronomical research, and of course, the names of the planets and constellations.
Dinosaurs
Everybody loves dinosaurs, and not only do we learn about evolution, geological time, and classification, we also have paleontological digs in our sandbox, chalk dinosaur footprints across our concrete, and more dinosaur books than anyone could ever read in a single week.
Oceans
Living next to one of the most productive and varied oceans in the world, we love to study the rocky shores of the Pacific Ocean, learn about whale migration, sea otter recovery, and all the different types of invertebrates that live in the oceans.
Insects
Every spring we raise caterpillars in both classrooms and watch them emerge as butterflies; we also raise wood lice (also known as pill bugs or roly pollies and ants in the yard, although those are unintended. Children love discovering tiny things, and encouraging them to play with and learn about insects, worms, and other tiny animals is a wonderful way to connecting the classroom environment to the outdoors.
WHAT People are saying
Parent Review
"Our child has truly flourished at Oakland Montessori School. From the very beginning, the teachers have consistently demonstrated exceptional care, patience, and dedication to each child’s unique personality and individual needs. Their thoughtful approach and deep understanding of child development have fostered our child’s growth not only academically but also socially and emotionally. We are consistently impressed by how the environment promotes independence, curiosity, and confidence. We are very grateful for the positive and nurturing foundation this school has provided."
